As a heavy user of all things Google, there are occasions when have forgotten to log out of a session. With the increased presence of Chromebooks in schools, students and teachers may run into a similar problem since Chromebooks don’t automatically log you out from your Google account, leaving you vulnerable. Fear not!
Remotely Sign Out from Drive & Gmail Web Sessions
You can remotely log out Gmail and Google Drive from any device to end all open web sessions by following these simple steps:
- Access your Gmail by going to www.mail.google.com
- Scroll to the bottom of the Gmail inbox window until you see “Account Details” which is in very small print at the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Click “Details”
- You will see all your active sessions displayed
- Click “Sign out of All Web Sessions” which will log you out of any web sessions.
You will have to re-log into any web sessions with your Google username and password to regain access on your devices, since this action will log you out form all sessions. Mobile devices typically access Google Drive and Mail using Apps, which will NOT be logged out using this method.
Remote Sign Out Procedure for Smartphones
The above instructions provide remote sign out for “Web Sessions”. If you have lost your phone and need to log out of Google Apps, you will need to take some additional steps as follows:
- Access your Google Account / Privacy settings by going to https://myaccount.google.com/?hl=en
- Under “Sign-in & security” click “Device activity & security events”.
- You will see a list of recently used devices. Click “Review Devices” to view more details.
- From the list that appears, find the device you want to remotely remove access for Google Apps and click the name of the device. Click REMOVE to revoke access on that device remotely.
Other people login from other devices to my gmail account

It wont take me to http://www.mail.google.com
thank you so much i was worried..
If you sign out of Gmail using this feature will it sign you out of all Google products?
@Justin, yes it will sign out of your Google Apps account which includes Drive
will this method sing out of apple mail app, the mail app where you can choose to login to your gMail account and you have acess to your emails through the app.
@Jp & Jon, please see the response I just left for Cynthia. This method is for Web sessions, not Apps.
Does not sign out of drive. My android app still opens fine.
I’m concerned that this feature is not working properly. I signed out of all sessions. Then changed my password. But I can still get into the accounts on my iphone without being asked for a password. My android phone is out being fixed and I couldn’t get into it to log out of my accounts/ google drive. Does anyone have any thoughts/ advice? Thank you.
Hi Cynthia-
I apologize if the post is not clear. This method will sign you out of WEB sessions, so if you were on a computer or Chromebook, and logged into your Google Drive account or email, then left that computer and want to log out remotely. When you use a mobile device, you are accessing things like Drive and Gmail using Apps, which automatically retain your credentials. I am not aware of any way to “Remotely” log out of an app. You can log out if you have the device, but in your case, since it’s been sent off you would not be able to. Since you changed your password, it should prevent anyone who has your phone from accessing your account since the password that is connected to the phone App is now incorrect. The user would have to enter the new password, which they won’t know, so you should be safe. Hope that helps!

Hi Jen many thanks for getting back so promptly. What has me concerned is that despite changing passwords on my laptop, I can still get onto the account on my iphone without being asked for verification/ re-entry of new password. I had another look online and did find another suggestion which I’ll post below as it may be helpful to other (it didn’t work for me though, as for some reason only my iphone shows on the remove list but not my android phone). Now it’s fingers crossed and surrendering to it! Thanks again and a great evening to you.
Remotely Log Out Gmail For Android
If you use an Android handset and it’s been stolen, or you left your phone unattended and unlocked, someone, anyone, can access your email. To sign out of Gmail on your Android phone, you need to take more drastic measures. You will have to revoke your phone’s access to your Gmail account. Head over to your Google Account Settings and go to the Security tab.
Under Account Permissions, click View All and wait for the list of apps, services, and devices to load. Your Android device will be listed here and when selected, you will see a Revoke Access button. Click it and your Android device will no longer be able to sync email, contacts, etc. Be warned that if you’ve lost your Android phone, revoking access to it like this is not a good idea if you plan on trying to lock or find it.

Jahid, resetting your password should work, but you may want to read through Cynthia’s comment from May 25th where she shares more details about revoking access that certain apps may have.

If browser in private mode chrome in mac can also disconnect?
hello im a student at a highschool. Our emails were created by the school district for every student to use. we got chromebooks that enabled us to learn better and to log in we use our school emails.
But I wanted to know if i logged into a different device NOT AT SCHOOL but at home with the same email though, can the teachers see what we are doing?
@David, when you sign into Chrome and it prompts you to “link data” that allows all of your bookmarks and browser history, etc, to be connected to your account, not a specific device. No one will be able to “see” what you are doing when logged into your account on a device outside of school, but, in theory, it may be possible for them to view your browser history if it hasn’t been cleared and the account data is linked.
Why is it so difficult to get out of
google? After 2 years I still don’t have an icon, but they sure make it hell on earth to get out of anything they stick you with without notice or any consideration.
In the last 4 years I haven’t even been able to get Chrome or Google Earth, but my page is totally wrecked.
Marcos, It sounds like you are signed into Chrome. Not sure what you mean when you say “I still don’t have an icon” or “my page is totally wrecked”. If you can elaborate, perhaps I can help? Perhaps this post may help: https://teachingforward.net/2015/03/13/managing-multiple-users-in-chrome/

Abdullah-
It sounds like you may be signed into multiple accounts in the same Chrome session. You may want to take a look at this post which explains best practices for signing onto multiple accounts in Google: https://teachingforward.net/2015/03/13/managing-multiple-users-in-chrome/
Thanks for this fellow human.
This makes me feel there is hope for humanity.

Great post! However I noticed that after signing out of all other web sessions, it still had me logged into my phone. Does this feature not work on phones? I have a phone that isn’t in my possession right now, and I’d like to log myself out of my email in that phone. I was testing this on my other phone I have, and it didn’t log me out of the email app. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Please review updated version of this post. I have added instructions for remote sign out for Smartphones.
