Getting someone’s name right is a small act that has a big impact. In schools, it’s one of the simplest ways to show respect, build relationships, and support a sense of belonging. This is especially true in diverse communities where names may be unfamiliar.
Google Workspace includes a name pronunciation feature that allows students and staff to record how their name is said and share it across tools like Gmail and Chat. It’s a simple, built-in way to make names more accessible and help people get them right—no new tools required.
What Is Name Pronunciation in Google Workspace?
Users can:
- Record a short audio clip of their name pronunciation
- Save it to their Google profile
- Let others listen in Gmail, Google Chat, or Contacts
Because it’s part of Google Workspace, it shows up right where people already work.

Optional: Create a Simple Name Lookup:
For classrooms or teams, you can create a quick, searchable list using a Google Doc or Sheet by adding names as people smart chips (@ name). Then search and find the name you are looking for using Ctrl+F or Edit > Find from the top menu and when hover to hear the pronunciation. This creates a lightweight lookup without storing any additional data.
A Simple, Built-In Way to Support Belonging
This approach works within the tools schools already use every day—no additional apps, accounts, or systems to manage.
For districts using Google Workspace for Education, it’s a simple, practical step that supports respect, connection, and a stronger sense of belonging for students and staff.
