Google Meet is a great tool for remote learning. Provide a better experience for students with these best practices creating calls and sharing your screen. Optimize your class video calls for remote learning with these tips.
Google Meet + Classroom = Improved Teacher Control
The integration of Google Meet with Classroom makes it easier for teachers to create and share calls safely with students. Enable auto-generated in Google Classroom Nicknamed Meeting links. This allows students and teachers to use the same link to join every class video call. This simplified process is also secure.
Since the link is generated for your Class, students cannot join without the teacher present. Teachers should be the last person to leave the call to ensure meeting participants can’t rejoin the call without a teacher present. Check out this tutorial video that explains how to turn on Meet inside of Google Classroom and how to share the link with students.
Split Screen to See Your Students While Presenting
Teachers want to see students while instructing and sharing their screen during Google Meet calls. This requires the use of the Grid View Chrome Extension so that you can see all of your students at one time and two screens. If you don’t have two devices, you can still accomplish this by splitting your screen into two separate windows. One window for your Meet call and the other to house the resources and sites you want to share with students. You can split your screen natively or with the help of the Dualless Chrome Extension. In the playlist below, both options are provided.
Chrome Tab for Playing Videos
When sharing video / multi-media content with students during a Google Meet, choose “A Chrome Tab” when moving into Present Mode. This allows computer audio to be shared optimally. If users experience any “echoing” during video play, just mute the presenter’s microphone or use headphones while video plays.
Selecting a “Chrome Tab” means your students can only see ONE website, or tab, at a time. When presenting a “Chrome Tab” the presenter’s screen shows a blue square in the tab that is being presented (#1 in image below). If the presenter wants to navigate to present a different tab, the top of the new tab will display the option to “Share this tab instead” (#2 in image below). If you want to toggle the specific tab your kids are viewing,
