Google Groups can be used effectively to link many people together via email around topics of interest. Active Groups are a great source of information but the volume of emails they can generate can become overwhelming, if not annoying. The following tips can help you stay in the loop without overwhelming your inbox:
Switch to a Daily Digest
1. Go to groups.google.com
2. Choose the Group you want to manage emails fromfrom the list
3. Click the drop down choice under “Subscription” to change your email preferences to Digest (1 email with all of the communications that day)
Consider Your Reply Options
When responding to messages, consider replying only to the sender (not the whole group). As a courtesy to the group, the original sender can summarize the response and share back out to the entire group in a single email.
Mute Responses for a Specific Thread/Topic (Gmail Users)
For Gmail users, if a particular message thread is not of interest, you can click the 3 dots at the top right corner of the ORIGINAL email message (not one of the replies) and choose “Mute” which will prevent any replies to a specific message thread from going to your inbox. Any “new” topics will show up for you.
Tabbed In Box (Gmail Users)
Set up a “Tabbed Inbox” which will allow any “Groups” messages to flow into that tab called “Forums” keeping your primary email inbox less cluttered.
Unsubscribe
As a last resort, if you don’t want to receive any more messages from the group, don’t label as “Spam”.
1. Go to groups.google.com
2. Choose the Group you want to manage emails from the list
3. Click “Leave Group”
