Secure Assessments Using Google Forms Locked Mode
Classroom teachers using school-managed Chromebooks can now assign Google Forms Quizzes via Classroom in Locked-Mode to prevent students from navigating away from assessments. Whether you are using an existing Forms Quiz or want to create a new one, getting started with Locked-Mode is simple once you understand your options. This new feature, currently in Beta, is due to launch in February to all G Suites for Education domains.
Assigning Locked Quizzes in Classroom
There are two methods for assigning a Locked Quiz in Google Classroom: Assignment & Quiz Assignment.
Create “Assignment” for Pre-Existing Google Forms Quizzes
Assignment (1) is used to assign previously created Google Forms Quizzes, in which you have added point values and answer key information, you can push the quiz out by creating an “Assignment” and clicking the Google Drive icon to find and add your pre-existing quiz. Once added, you simple slide over the “Locked-Mode” button before saving the assignment.
Create “Quiz Assignment” to Generate a New Google Forms Quiz
Using the “Quiz Assignment” option in Classroom generates a Blank Google Form set to Quiz Mode. The teacher would then open the Blank Quiz, name it and edit it before posting to Classroom. As with the “Assignment” example above, the Locke Mode on Chromebooks slide will be activated. If you’ve never created a Google Forms Quiz click HERE for details and check out THIS post for question formatting tips.
Student View of Locked-Mode Quizzes
Locked-Mode only works on school-managed Chromebooks, this includes 1:1 Chromebooks and Chromebooks on shared carts. To begin taking the quiz in locked-mode, students click on the assignment containing the quiz and are presented with the following warning, notifying them that “Locked mode is on.” and to complete the quiz before closing.
If students attempt to close the quiz, before they are finished, the following warning is displayed.
